Fédération Internationale de Football Association, also known as FIFA, insists that the posts securely be anchored in the ground. They also insist that the net is fastened behind the goal and must not impede upon the goalkeeper. The net should be attached to the goalposts without gaps or holes that allow the ball to escape.
The goalposts should be 8 yards apart, and the lower end of the crossbar is 8 feet above the ground. They should be in the range of 4 inches and 5 inches thick. The height of the net should extend 2 feet behind and level with the crossbar.
Goal lines must be drawn on the field with the same width as the uprights and crossbar. The goalposts and crossbar are usually white. The lines on the field should also be white.
The uprights and crossbar should be made of wood, metal, or other approved materials. Acceptable shapes of the posts are four-sided square or rectangle, circular, half-round, or egg-shaped. They should not pose a threat to players meaning they should not have jagged edges or sharp points.
We should note that there are exceptions made for youth or indoor football games. They do not go with the same size as a standard football game. For example, US Youth Football recommends between 6.5 to 7 feet high and 16.5 to 21 feet wide. However, official indoor football goals are 6 feet 6 inches high and 12 feet wide.
